Appwrite has raised $10 million to build its open-source rival to Google’s Firebase amid rapid developer community growth.

The open-source Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS) provider raised the cash via two successive seed funding rounds led first by Ibex Investors and Seed Camp and followed by Bessemer Venture Partners and Flybridge Capital Partners.

Flybridge is a particularly interesting investor as the firm was an early investor in Firebase back in 2013.

Uri Boness (Elastic) and James Lidenbaum (Heroku) were among the individual investors that have also expressed confidence in Appwrite’s mission.

“I started Appwrite to scratch my own itch, but it has quickly become something so much bigger than me,” said Eldad Fux, founder and CEO of Appwrite.

“Clearly, many developers were having similar challenges with current backend servers for application development, because today we have a team of open-source developers building the product and thousands of new community members every day.”

Some reports forecast the global BaaS market to grow at a CAGR of 68.2 percent during 2021-2027.

Chip Hazard, General Partner at Flybridge Capital Partners, commented:

“The backend-as-a-service category is on fire and is poised for disruption.

Because Appwrite is built by open-source developers for developers, it empowers anyone to build their apps their way across any platform and in any language.

We believe Appwrite has the lead on the next-generation of BaaS companies.”

In the last three months alone, more than 40,000 developers have joined Appwrite’s community along with 250 global maintainers.

As a self-hosted solution, developers are not locked into Appwrite and can host the service on any production or development infrastructure.
